2015 Ford Mustang to Shed 400 Pounds

When the 2015 Ford Mustang surfaces, not only will it feature an independent rear suspension and a turbocharged engine, it could weigh as much as 400 pounds less than the current model.

The current Ford Mustang V6 weighs in at 3,523 pounds with an automatic transmission and as the American automaker searches for ways to improve its sport car’s fuel efficiency, having the Mustang go on a diet is a main priority. According to a source close to the Mustang project, Ford is working on removing “a minimum of 400 pounds” for the next-generation ‘Stang.

In addition, the Mustang will be slightly smaller with less overhang on all sides of the sports car. It is believed that the overall length of the new Mustang will be approximately 15 inches shorter while its width will be about 6.5 inches narrower than the current model.

The 2015 Ford Mustang coupe is expected to make its debut at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show or at the 2014 New York Auto Show.

weighing less is a big plus and being 400 pounds down will help a lot when it comes to straight line performance and even when going around a road course.

Im more excited about the 400 lb loss coupled with the IRS the S550 is supposed to get. No more of these comparos burning the Mustang for its cornering performance. Cant wait for S550 to smoke the Camaro hands down across the board.

Oh for sure It's good that ford made a good decision on shedding weight for the mustang's physique. Better stability and better control no matter how you look at it.

It will only be better from here on. Straights and in corners the new mustang will be on the hunt.

The Camaro doesn't stand a chance. I have a good feeling that the S550 this time around will outperform the camaro. Just watch...

It's about time the mustang went on a diet though.

With 400lbs it will work hand in hand with the new independent suspension. Better handling for those sharps on the track. With this much power and control the new S500 will put up a good fight against it's competitors.

you can't say the Camaro doesn't stand a chance, there's very little information on it aside from it going on a smaller cadillac platform. that smaller cadillac platform alone will help it be more like the S550 Mustang.

I would be genuinely impressed if the Mustang shed that much weight. It would change the dynamics of the Mustang greatly.
